Over 5 million meals at 1 euro served by CROUS

All audiences

Since the implementation in January of measures to serve meals at 1 euro for all students, about 5.5 million meals were served in 540 CROUS restaurants open in the French territory.

The “Meals at 1 euro for students” initiative has truly been a challenge, and shows that CROUSes, as the Ministry or Higher Education, Research and Innovation underlines, “could show great flexibility to reach the frontline of an unprecedented crisis” while still fulfilling their primary “public service mission of social assistance to students”.

Meals at 1 euro for all students

To face the increase of student precariousness, the French president announced on January 21 “an extension of 1-euro meals to non-scholarship recipient students”. The CROUSes declare that this action helped multiply by five the number of meals served every week to student in January, up from 160,000 to 780,000. Non-scholarship recipient students are indeed the ones who benefitted most from this action: the number of meals per week increased 9 times, from 50,000 to more than 450,000

1-Euro meals: an appropriate action

The Ministry declared that even though “students are not even back full time on campuses because of the health situation”, the increase through the months of university restaurants attendance “shows how successful and appropriate this measure is”. Figures show that with the implementation of 1-euro meals for all students, 3,2 million meals were served in March 2021, a number that overcame the number of meals served in September 2020. Indeed, over 3 million meals at 1 euro were served in March, to which need to be added 2 million meals in February and 780,000 in January.

Uninterrupted success and an implication from everybody

The uninterrupted success of this action is confirmed since late January by the opening rate of restaurants in the network, up from 50% to over 80% in late March. To obtain this result, the ministry stressed the commitment of all parties and notes that “6,500 agents assisted by employed students, worked every day to help students enjoy a quality and affordable meal”.

Fight against all student precariousness

In addition to this necessary initiative, and because “students face the full force of economic, social and psychological impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic”, the ministry of higher education reminds that the government has engaged exclusive actions to support them as soon as the eruption of the health crisis. The idea was to quickly answer all types of student precariousness through the use of financial support, assist the most vulnerable with targeted actions, but also encourage university success and guarantee the quality of degrees.
