Medical studies: the numerus clausus increases by 7.4% in September

Prior its abolition in 2020, the numerus clausus that limits the number of students admitted to the second year of medical studies, will be increased by 7.4% in September 2019.

This good news for students has just been made public by an order of the ministries of health and higher education, published in the Official Journal of 21 April, which sets a new numerus clausus*.

The number of students who will be admitted to the second year of medicine, pharmacy, odontology and midwifery at the beginning of September will increase by 7.4% compared to last year, or 1,405 more places.

Broken down for the four sectors, 14,928 places are open for all admission modalities combined, with 9,314 places in medicine (+ 1,109 places), 1,320 places in dentistry (+ 117), 3,261 in pharmacy (+ 137) and 1,033 in midwifery (+ 42).

This significant increase comes at a time when the Ministry of Higher Education has launched a new phase of consultation on the reform of access to health studies, in accordance with the desire of the President of the Republic who in September 2018 announced a profound transformation in the organisation of these courses.

* The Latin expression numerus clausus, which means closed number, designates the number of students admitted each year to continue into the 2nd year of their medical studies.
