4 interdisciplinary institutes to win the artificial intelligence battle

Artificial intelligence is one of the big new scientific and societal challenges. Therefore, the ministers in charge of research and digital affairs have just announced the launch of four Interdisciplinary Institutes for Artificial Intelligence (3IA).

"The battle for artificial intelligence is first and foremost a battle for human intelligence. We must keep and attract the best scientific researchers in the world so they become our future researchers and they feed the French ecosystem". These are the words of the new Secretary of State for Digital affairs at the official launch of the 4 interdisciplinary artificial intelligence institute projects in major French cities.

Within the framework of the national strategy for Artificial Intelligence, announced by the President of the Republic on AI for Humanity day in March 2018, this program was endowed with more than one billion Euros . The government has thereby tried to create a network consisting of a few interdisciplinary institutes for Artificial Intelligence (3IA). These institutes, appointed by an international jury, have been set up in 4 French cities with specialist subjects.

  • in Grenoble, (health, the environment, energy);
  • in Nice, (health, territorial development);
  • in Paris, (health, transport, the environment);
  • in Toulouse, (transport, the environment, health)

To complete the national AI research program, and in parallel with the action of these institutes, two calls for projects open to the entire scientific community will soon be launched, one dealing with individual AI professorships, the other with doctoral programs. Because, as the Minister of Research points out, "the timely deployment of the national AI research program is essential to give substance to the AI for Humanity strategy".
