What do young executives dream of?

The results of an annual survey with French students of major business and engineering schools regarding their future career, launched by Universum, a Swedish agency specialised in employers consulting, have just been published.

Every year since 1999, Universum asks a group of more than 35,000 students to talk about their professional ambitions, their expectations in terms of salary, their favourite industry, and their favourite companies.

Companies and favourite industries

In the top 5 of “Companies of your dreams”, students from business and engineering schools prefer luxury, fashion and GAFAM companies, with, in order: LVMH, L’Oréal, Google, Chanel, and Apple.

Students from schools of Engineering prefer Google (in second position), but also aeronautics, space, and defence with Airbus ranked first, Thales third, then Safran and Dassault Aviation.

However, 8% of students want to create their own company, a figure that doubled in 4 years, notes Universum.

Priorities

In terms of priority, for students in business and management, the main driver is the perspective of high future revenues, followed by an ambitious and challenging work.

For engineers, a challenging work is ranked first, followed by a pleasant work atmosphere.

Less important priorities for both categories include performance and commitment for diversity.

Salary expectations

According to the study, even though young executive’s commitment for women-men equality grew, salary expectations vary depending on gender: female students from business schools are less ambitious than their male counterparts (11% gap).

Future female engineers had higher expectations this year, so the gap with male engineers is tightening, with a 7% difference.

A Campus France survey

Well beyond expectations of French future executives, Campus France launched a broad survey to understand who are the international students in France, why they are in France, what their studies and what courses are, what their motivations are, etc. All these questions will help Campus France improve the quality of their reception of international students in France!
