Scholarship programme for Syrian students exiled in France

This scholarship programme is specifically directed towards Syrian students exiled in France and enrolled in French higher education institutions. It aims to finance their studies for up to 2 years. The call for applications for the 2020/2021 academic year is in progress. The deadline to apply is 26 June 2020. 

As part of the specific assistance given to Syrian refugees decided by the President of the Republic, the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs has set up a scholarship programme for Syrian students enrolled in higher education institutions in France. It aims to finance their studies in France for a maximum duration of 3 years. The management of this programme is entrusted to Campus France. Since 2016, more than 200 Syrian students exiled in France have benefitted from this programme.  

This scholarship programme gives priority to advanced studies in the following areas:

  • sciences in general (engineering sciences, natural sciences: agronomy, mathematics, physics, chemistry and life sciences, nano and biotechnologies, earth sciences, the universe and the environment, information and communication sciences and technologies);
  • economics and management;
  • law and political sciences;
  • human and social sciences;
  • architecture and urbanism

Duration of the scholarship

The scholarship is awarded for a period of 12 to 24 months maximum:

  • 12 months for direct registration in M2
  • 24 months maximum for direct registration in M1

The scholarship may be awarded during a period of language training prior to enrolment in a Master's degree for a period not exceeding one academic year. 

The scholarship will take effect at the beginning of the 2020 academic year.

Programme benefits

For the scholar

  • Social protection: reimbursement of mutual insurance of up to € 264 per year;
  • Monthly allowance of € 700;
  • Help in finding CROUS accommodation;
  • Pedagogical follow-up
  • Scholar status of the French government which exempts scholars from the payment of university fees. The Contribution Vie Etudiante et de Campus - CVEC (Student Life and Campus Fees) remain the responsibility of the scholar.

For the host institution 

  • Payment of a lump sum of € 1,000 per year and per scholar to the host institution.

This sum must allow the institution to appoint a single point of contact, responsible for communicating information to Campus France on the course of studies of the scholar and to assist them in the resolution of any administrative problems they may encounter. This sum is paid to the institution by Campus France upon presentation of an invoice.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Students of Syrian nationality who hold or who are in the process of obtaining a residence permit may apply. Priority will be given to students with refugee status. There is no age limit to apply but priority will be given to students under 28 years of age. 

Applicants for this scholarship programme will:

  • either be enrolled in Master (M1 or M2) level course at the start of the 2020 academic year; 

The language level required will be the one required by the institution where the student will study. 

Good to know

Students already receiving a scholarship under another programme at the time of application are not eligible. This applies in particular to students holding a French government scholarship, a CROUS social criteria scholarship, a European scholarship, a scholarship from the Syrian government or any other Syrian institution, a scholarship awarded by local authorities, private foundations, etc.

HOW TO APPLY ?

Applications are to be sent electronically to candidaturesyrie@campusfrance.org. Only files sent by email will be accepted. Any file sent by post or deposited at Campus France will be refused. 

List of documents to be attached to your application file

  • Application form,
  • Proof of academic path (baccalaureate, transcripts and diplomas obtained),
  • Cover letter,
  • Photocopy of passport
  • Copy of residence permit,
  • Banking details
  • If applicable, letter(s) of acceptance for a course for the year 2020/2021. 

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS ? 

A selection committee composed of experts will be responsible for selecting the files. The selection criteria are as follows:

  • the academic level of the candidate, as evidenced by their previous academic career;
  • the quality and relevance of the candidate's personal and professional project (cover letter);
  • priority will be given to students with a relevant study or professional project for the reconstruction of Syria and expressing willingness to participate in it;
  • priority will be given to Syrian students born after 1 September 1992;
  • upon equal competence and merit, respect for parity.

Calendar

  • Deadline for receipt of applications by Campus France: Friday 26 June 2020
  • Selection Commission: July 2020
  • Distribution of the list of selected students: July 2020
  • Beginning of the scholarship: beginning of 2020 academic period (according to the date of the scholar's return to university)
