France on the top step of the podium for mathematics courses

Students, Researcher

US News & World Report, a famous media popular in the United States for these numerous rankings, has just released its seventh annual world ranking of the best universities in all sectors, especially in mathematics. France is ranked first among the best establishments in this speciality.

It is a good surprise for France, even though its reputation is already widely recognised in the field of mathematics, to find itself with two establishments ranked in the Top 10 of a prestigious ranking. The latter ranked 1,500 universities or schools, from a corpus of 1,748 institutions in 86 countries, mainly on the basis of their research performance in the field of mathematics.

A ranking that puts France in the spotlight

These are two French institutions which this year are included in a Top 10 which brings together the best universities in the world. With a total of 100 points, achieved on the basis of thirteen indicators, Sorbonne University is indeed in the lead, ahead of MIT, Stanford, Princeton and Cambridge.

Also in sixth place is the University of Paris, which is followed in the Top 10 by Berkeley, Oxford and Harvard.

A ranking to better choose France

As US News & World Report writes, "as more and more students plan to enrol in universities outside their own country, the ranking of the world's top universities, which focuses specifically on university research and the global reputation of schools, can help these candidates", and therefore, why not, help them choose France!

A less favourable general ranking in the United States

In addition to mathematics, US News & World Report offers an overall ranking according to which, this year, "the top 50 universities in the world are located outside North America". European institutions are particularly well represented, spread across eight countries: the United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. Not surprisingly, according to US News & World Report, "many of the world's top universities are located in major metropolitan cities.
