European Heritage Days: discover the 17,000 sites that are expecting you!

On September 21 and 22, France will organise the European Heritage Days. It’s the perfect opportunity (and it’s free!) to discover or re-discover the most famous sites, not-so-famous sites, and even unexpected sites.

Like each year since 1984, the French ministry of culture will organise the Heritage Days operation, which became European in 1991. This year, arts and entertainment heritage sites are under the spotlights in France and in most participating European countries.

17,000 sites open

It’s the perfect opportunity for all audiences to discover French heritage, a heritage made of thousands of monuments from all eras: castles, churches, theatres, city halls, gardens, bridges, lighthouses, factories, and of course schools and universities. During Heritage Days, about 12 million people visit 17,000 sites and participate in exclusive events, organised with artistic or recreational shows.

In Paris and all regions

Like the ministry of culture wrote to present the 36th edition, “our heritage is our pride, it’s our roots, and it’s the proof of the height of construction ingenuity that has been in place for centuries in our country”. In addition to landmark places in Paris, the ministry of higher education organises a history tour (on the Descartes site). The ministry of foreign affairs organises a tour at the Quai d’Orsay, with a focus on diplomacy archives. But closer to students’ interest, everywhere in France, many schools and universities also open their doors to offer access to their heritage and collections.
