"Europe of Universities", Campus France at the annual conference of the CPU

Researcher, Institutions

The annual conference of the Conference of Presidents of Universities (CPU) was held on March 15 and 16 at the University of Burgundy, with the participation of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. Béatrice Khaiat, General Director of Campus France, spoke in two workshops.

The conference focused on 3 main topics:

  • Stakeholders of European university policies: identify, organise, implement
  • The Student's European Area
  • Europe of Universities: an emerging reality?

280 participants debated together on the Europe universities need: what format will European adopt? How to tackle challenges post-Bologna process? What participation for universities in European programs? What interactions with regional and national players and with research entities? ...

Béatrice Khaiat, General Director of Campus France, was invited to participate in the workshop "Offshore internationalisation or domestic internationalisation: what stakes for virtual mobility?" She also participated in the exchanges during the round table dedicated to obstacles to the creation of the Student's European Area.

The vent was also a good opportunity to highlight the key figures of European mobility...

  • Europe is the first host area for international mobility. The European Union currently hosts 36% of international students in mobility.
  • The mobility of European students is mostly is mostly distributed on the continent: 85% of students from the EU stay in Europe for their mobility.
  • The 5 first host countries for European students are: Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Italy
  • About 304,000 students were in Erasmus mobility in 2015/16.

... and to remind that France already implemented the main provisions of the European directive passed in 2016 to attract more students and international graduates by offering even more interesting conditions than those offered by the EU:

  • Possibility to extend your stay by 9 months after your studies; France offers the opportunity to stay 12 months.
  • Right to work during your studies for a minimum of 15 hours/week; in France, the minimum is 20 hours/week.
  • End of the obligation to file a visa application for a mobility inside the EU to continue your studies: a step included in the law project for controlled immigration and effective right of asylum (article 21).
