Generation ISS competition: immediate boarding for two student projects!

All audiences

Organized by CNES, France’s national space studies center, the Generation ISS competition encouraged students to develop a project for French astronaut Thomas Pesquet to carry along on his next mission aboard the International Space Station at the end of 2020.

Teams of students submitted more than 80 proposals for projects in art, media, education, technology, or science—all with a connection to space. The competition was designed to showcase the French educational system’s spirit of innovation and excellence.

Two winning projects were announced at the end of June. Both are paired projects:

  • Plateforme and Figure de Chladni, submitted by the University of Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier, fuse technology, science, and teaching.
  • Groot and La rose du Petit Prince were submitted as a pair by the Nantes School of Design and the University of Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier, respectively. Groot proposes playfully to grow a tulip on the ISS and on earth. La rose du Petit Prince centers on sensorial experiences  that include symbolic and poetic aspects.

In awarding the prizes, Frédérique Vidal, France’s minister of higher education, research, and innovation, observed that “the first part of the space mission has been accomplished!” Now, she continued, the winners must "fine-tune their projects, with help from CNES, before they are sent to the International Space Station and implemented by Thomas Pesquet." CNES chairman Jean-Yves Le Gall wrapped up the event, noting that “the adventure begins today and will play out over our heads.”
