Top 100 most innovative universities in Europe: France is among the leaders.

Reuters has just released its annual ranking of innovative establishments in Europe. With 18 universities on the list, France scores well and ranks among the top 3 most innovative European countries for higher education and research.

What is an "innovative university"? According to Reuters, it is an institution that "achieves original research, creates useful technologies and stimulates the world economy". To establish this ranking, Reuters has identified more than 600 institutions in Europe, focusing in particular on the number of patents filed and of citations of research publications.

With 18 institutions on the list, France is among the leaders. It lies 3rd, after Germany (23 institutions) and the UK (21 institutions) Somewhat further back come the Netherlands (9 institutions), Belgium (7), Spain and Switzerland (5), Italy (4), Denmark (3), Norway (2) and Austria and Ireland (1).

Among the top 10 French institutions ranked, we find:

  • The Université Paris Sud-Paris 11 (15th position);
  • The Université de Montpellier (17th);
  • The Université Paris-Descartes (18th);
  • The Université Paris-Sorbonne (22nd); 
  • The Université de Bordeaux (24th); 
  • The Université Grenoble-Alpes (33rd);
  • The Université de Lille (39th);
  • The Université Lyon 1-Claude Bernard (41st);
  • The Université d’Aix-Marseille (50th);
  • The Ecole Polytechnique (55th).
