The Times Higher Education world ranking 2024 now includes 44 French institutions

Every year, the Times Higher Education releases its ranking of the best universities in the world. In 2024, no less than 44 French institutions are included, including four in the Top 100. They all won ranks in the ranking.

The Times Higher Education (THE) ranking, created in 2010, examined this year the results of more than 1,900 institutions in 104 countries and regions worldwide. The ranking uses a study assessing performances such as reputation, the quality and missions of higher education institutions, using 13 indicators divided in five categories: quality of education and research, innovation capacity, transfer of knowledge, influence of research, openness to the international.

 

 

Sharp progress for French institutions

In total, 44 French institutions are in the Top 3, meaning two more than in the previous THE ranking.

More precisely, the four French institutions in the Top 100 all went up the ranking and won several ranks!

Again, the University of Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) is in first position of best French universities (40th), up 7 ranks compared to the previous ranking.

The second is the University of Paris-Saclay, up 35 positions compared to the previous release, to the 58th rank of the ranking. Follow Institut Polytechnique de Paris, up 24 ranks (71th) and Sorbonne University, up 15 ranks (75th).

 

44 French institutions in the 1,500 institutions ranked

Beyond the Top 100 are 12 additional French institutions in the Top 500 group. They are:

  • Université Paris Cité (152th);
  • Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (between the 251st and 300th rank);
  • Université Grenoble-Alpes (between the 301st and 350th rank);
  • Montpellier Université (between the 301st and 350th rank);
  • Aix-Marseille Université (between the 351st and 400th rank);
  • Université de Bordeaux (between the 351st and 400th rank);
  • Ecole Centrale de Nantes (between the 401st and 500th rank).

between the 401st and 500th rank are also:

  • Université Claude-Bernard of Lyon;
  • Ecole des Ponts Paris Tech;
  • Université de Toulouse;
  • IMT Atlantique;
  • Institut Agro.

Further down the ranking are 18 more institutions in the Top 1,000 group:

  • between the 500th and 600th rank: Université Côte d’Azur, ENSTA Bretagne, Nantes Université, Sciences Po Paris;
  • between the 601st and 800th rank: Ecole Centrale of Lyon, Ecole des Mines of Saint-Etienne, Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l'Etat (ENTPE), Université de Lille, Université de Lorraine, INSA Lyon;
  • between the 801st and 1,000th rank:  Ecole des Arts et Métiers, Université de Bretagne Occidentale, Université de Clermont-Auvergne, CY – Cergy Paris Université, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Université de Poitiers, Université Rennes 1, Université de Tours.

Further beyond the Top 1,000, are 10 additional French institutions (bteween the 1,001st and 1,500th rank): Université de Franche-Comté, IMT Nord-Europe, Université de Technologie of Troyes, Université Polytechnique des Hauts-de-France, Université Lyon 2 – Louis Lumière, Université Paris-Nanterre, Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Université de Technologie de Compiègne, Université Lyon 3 - Jean Moulin.
