8 students out of 10 are satisfied with student life in France!

Students, Institutions

Every year, the Smerep (one of the organisations managing student social security) has just published a major survey by the polling organisation Opinionway about students' health and lifestyle.

There many lessons to learn from this comprehensive survey. In addition to an overall view on health, the survey provides several information in relation with conditions of living, diet, sports practice and sexuality.

An overall good condition

In 2018, 8 students out of 10 say they are satisfied with their life, and a large majority of students (84%) consider themselves in good health. But when they are sick, 82% of them declare not seeing a doctor: they "wait until it's over" and/or use auto medication.

Irregular conditions of living

About half the students have "odd jobs": 47% say they work during their studies, 25% of them for more than 16 hours per week. But 52% say they are in a difficult financial situation.

An often unbalanced diet

Though 46% of students say they pay attention to their diet, but in practice, their diet is irregular: 93% "nibble" (54% out of self-indulgence) and 56% skip a meal. However, 68% of them say they pay attention to the quality of their food.

Regular sports practice

Many students practice sports on a regular basis: 44% practice sports several times a week and 64% at least once a week. Only 9% of them never practice a sport.

Happy, but stressed out students

78% of students says they are satisfied with their life overall, but 91% of them say they experience periods of stress. 56% have trouble falling asleep (due to the exam period).

Healthy sexuality, but at risk

74% of students over 16 years old declared having already had sexual intercourse, and the first intercourse happened at 17 years old in average. A short majority (52%) use a condom to protect themselves from STDs and to prevent pregnancies. To be noted that 6 students out of 10 take the pill.
