PAUSE programme: call for applications open until May 15

The national programme for emergency reception for scientists in exile (PAUSE program) has just opened a new call for applications for researcher and/or higher education institutions seeking to welcome a scientist or a PhD student (“Doctorant”).

The PAUSE programme was created in 2017 to grant stimulus funding to higher education institutions and public research centre seeking to welcome scientists in emergency and support them in their processes.

The deadline for the new call for applications for which applications must be completed by receiving research and/or higher education institutions is May 15, 2020.

Who is eligible?

All research and higher education institutions under direct supervision from the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, specific private higher education institutions and specific institutions from the Ministry of Culture can apply for this programme. Subsidies granted as part of the programme aim at funding projects for the reception of foreign scientists from any geographic origin and for any scientific programme, regardless of the field.

What requirements?

Scientists who are interested and whose application is supported by an institution must prove:

  • a teacher-researcher or researcher status or registration in a PhD course;

  • an emergency situation, i.e. “to be the victim of persecutions or violence because of the content of research, free speech, identity, beliefs, or sexual preference”.

What funding?

The Collège de France in charge of the administrative system of the project points out that this new call for applications gives right to two types of funding:

  • a funding up to 100% of a 3 years PhD (“doctoral”) contract for students not yet registered in a PhD course in France, and not registered in a PhD course for more than 1 year in their country of origin;

  • a co-funding up to 60% for 1 year, renewable one time, for all other applications, including applications for PhD students registered in a PhD course in France or in their country of origin for more than one year.

How to apply?

If an institution wants to volunteer to welcome a scientist in danger, but is not directly in contact with a researcher, the Collège de France can put the institution in relation with one of the researchers who applied directly to the programme. Profiles of researchers can be found in a dedicated section.
