Bologna Process Conference in late May in Paris: 48 countries extend their commitment for higher education

France holds a new Bologna Process Conference on May 24 and 25 to gather the ministers of higher education from 48 European countries participating in the Declaration of Bologna since 1999.

The organisation in Paris of the European Ministerial Conference for Higher Education is the perfect opportunity for France to show how "this Europe of culture, knowledge, language sharing" should be "deeply refunded", as declared the French President in his speech in Athens in September. He declared that the goal is to "be more ambitious in a Europe of culture, and higher education and academic exchange!"

The event takes part of national priorities for the renewal of the European project. The event shows the determination of France to commit to Europe and reinforce the cooperation between governments for the future of higher education.

The Bologna process aims at:

- increasing the mobility of students, teachers and researchers;

- delivering degrees both easy to understand and equivalent between countries  (with common tools, such as the ECTS credits);

- structuring higher education trainings in three cycles;

- developing the European aspect of higher education.

In the wake of the international event, the final declaration should stress the necessity to improve the implementation of fundamental values of higher education, such as democracy, and the principles of peace and freedom.

Please note that the year 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the Declaration of the Sorbonne that, one year before the Bologna Process, determined the commitment of France, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom for a convergence of higher education systems.
