HOPES Scholarship program for graduate studies funded by the EU 'Madad' Fund in Jordan 

The project HOPES is pleased to announce the second intake of its scholarship program for refugees from Syria in Jordan in partnership with UNHCR’s Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI).

The HOPES scholarship covers two years of post-graduate education (Master’s Degree). Extension to the second year is subject to the demonstration of satisfactory performance during the first year of the Master’s Degree program. 

Eligibility criteria:

To be eligible for application, a candidate must:

  1. be a refugee from Syria,
  2. be under 32 years old,
  3. hold a valid refugee permit issued by UNHCR,
  4. have successfully completed a bachelor degree from a recognized university with at least a good average,
  5. have no other financial means of support for obtaining the master’s degree,

not be a current beneficiary of any other academic scholarships, 

  1. have a tentative acceptance letter from the GJU in case that he or she would like to study at this university.


  • Candidates already enrolled in master programs at Jordanian universities are also eligible to apply.
  • Women are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Pre-selected applicants will undergo six weeks of English language intensive courses previous to their master studies. This will enable them to pass the National English Language Exam and help them during their study. (These courses as well as transportation costs will be covered by HOPES.)

     Students who successfully pass these courses will be invited to the interviews in which the final decision on the master scholarships is made.

The HOPES scholarship covers the following:  

  • Annual registration/tuition fees.
  • Living allowance covering basic expenses, such as food and local travel during the semester. 

Required Documents for Application: 

  1. HOPES scholarship application form. The form is available electronically on the www.hopes-madad.org website or can be found as a hard copy at the HOPES office in Amman and at UNHCR offices.
  2. A valid copy of UNHCR Asylum seeker certificate or proof of registration in UNHCR.
  3. Copies of High School Diploma, Bachelor degree certificates and transcripts.
  4. Original copy of the initial Masters’ degree acceptance letter for the academic year 2017/2018 (only for applicants who wish to study at GJU).
  5. Registration at university and – if available – transcripts (only for those already enrolled in a master study program).

Originals must be shown to the HOPES selection committee during the interview should the applicant be invited to it.


Selection Procedures:

The selection process involves several steps:   


  1. Applications are received until 15 June 2017 and assessed for compliance with the eligibility criteria.
  2. The best candidates fulfilling these criteria and requirements are placed in six weeks English course starting 1 July 2017 prior to their regular master studies 2017.
  3. The most successful graduates of the English courses will be invited for an interview with the HOPES selection committee to take place in August 2017
  4. Selected candidates are informed of the committee’s decision by telephone and in writing no later than 30 August 2017.

(Please note: travel expenses for attending the interview cannot be covered.)
